Meteorological Balloons Used to Contraband Cigarettes Forced Closure of Vilnius Airport
Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
